I’m actually convinced that it has to do with the genre shift that…

For me, the genre shift happened right at the beginning of season four, when Dean was resurrected because he was important. While the aesthetic remained the same for awhile, the whole chosen one, fate of the world, good-versus-evil deal brought the show closer to action/adventure or even fantasy than the earlier seasons. I think the Western theme is very clear in the first two seasons, where Sam and Dean ride into a town like the gunslingers of old, leave the place safer than they found it, and then disappear into the dark, onto the next place that needed them. I got the sense that this was a world that was big and frightening and full of monsters, and Sam and Dean were just two people who never could save everybody. It was a day-in-day-out kind of thing, not about big gestures but little moments, and the willingness to keep going. I’d also rank that as important among the gothic elements, that futility, where they could save individual lives, but they couldn’t change the shape of the world. It was an unrelenting struggle against inevitable darkness, and yeah, it was grim as hell. You could see why they got tired. You could see why they didn’t want to do it alone.

All that changed when Dean got a destiny. Suddenly, the Winchesters were important, not because of what they’d done, what they’d sacrificed, but because of what they’d been born, which is one of those fantasy tropes I hate. It rips me right out of the story, because I’m no longer reading about or watching someone I could be like if I just had the strength or the courage. No, now this is a story about people who are above me and everyone I’ve ever met, and because of blood of all things. God, I hate that, but I hated it even more in Supernatural, because you come to expect it in stories with noble houses and ancient bloodlines. I didn’t expect it at all from a story about blue collar boys with rough hands and guns at their backs, so when the show sprung it on me, it was that much more of a disappointment.

It made the world a lot smaller, too, putting Sam and Dean at the center of it. It should have raised the stakes, but it lowered them. It went from Sam and Dean against a world that was cold and unforgiving and too huge to take any notice of their passing to Sam and Dean in a world of dei ex machina, fallbacks and setups and objects lessons, the world doubling over on itself to preserve or coerce or prove a point to these two boys, because they were too important to be allowed to go unchecked. And the thing is, it’s not like I wanted Sam and Dean to be totally ordinary. I wasn’t looking for an everyman story, I was looking for their story. I didn’t mind Sam being part of the mythology in seasons one and two, because Sam was just one of a few dozen kids who had their lives wrenched off course by an ambitious demon, and it was a tragedy that he had to have his life ruined as a part of someone’s scheme. But come season four, nope, Sam’s life wasn’t ruined because he was never meant to have a normal life. He was Lucifer’s true vessel, and that wasn’t something done to him, it was just fate. I didn’t mind Sam and Dean being part of the mythology, but when they became it, it eclipsed most of what was interesting about them, limited them to a few choices instead of a myriad of them. Now they did what they did, not because of anything internal, not because of history or motivation or duty or love, but because of the machinations of heaven and hell.

And yes, I know that Supernatural ultimately subverted the whole destiny thing, that they became Team Free Will and Sam and Dean didn’t make the choices they were destined to make. But I’d rather they never had those choices in front of them at all. I don’t want a story about a world that could be saved or damned in a minute, by the deeds of two chosen men. I want my boys in their car and the long road ahead, small choices and the will to keep going.

*nods* This is probably why a lot of fans still count the first three as their favorite seasons.

OMG Sam. Sam has been carrying all this despair and hopelessness this whole time. There never WAS a “light at the end of the tunnel” for Sam. He just let Dean believe it so Dean would be safe. He was doing the trials for Dean.

OMG. Season 8 makes sense now, right?!?! All Sam’s wooden expressions and out-of-character behavior? When we rewatch this season, it will be SO SAD because SAAAAM!

Except…

You don’t watch a season in reverse. Reveals like this are awesome if you’ve been led in one direction all along with enough validity and rationale to make you believe it, to make *that* story engaging. But if all it’s done is leave you confused and uninterested, then getting a payoff like this in the last five minutes of a season-long disaster feels a little like a consolation prize.

Because what if we’d been allowed to see the dramatic irony of Sam actually struggling with his feelings of hopelessness and despair and the belief that he always let Dean down while Dean believed Sam was the one with all the hope? How much more compelling would THAT have been?

Oh well, what’s done is done.

There once was a young boy with a very bad temper. The boy’s father wanted to teach him a lesson, so he gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper he must hammer a nail into their wooden fence.

“You have done very well, my son,” he smiled, “but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same.”

The little boy listened carefully as his father continued to speak.

“When you say things in anger, they leave permanent scars just like these. And no matter how many times you say you’re sorry, the wounds will still be there.”

This was really an amazing and necessary thing to read right now.
